HELP! Won't boot into windows

Have a dimension 2400 and it started rebooting all by itself and now won't boot into windows at all. The 4 diagnostic lights on the back of computer are all green. pulled the battery out and reset the bios. No help. Did the Control, alt, D to check the disk and this was ok. Ran the Dell Diagnostics from the CD and everything checks ok except the checks for the hard drive. Have the 40 G hard drive partitioned to 20G C drive and 20 G D drive and the diagnostics will not read the D drive. I do have trouble with it rebooting even from the CD. Cannot even reload windows. Keeps freezing up or reboots or get error message that it cannot find a file. Never the same one. Also disconnected all the hookups on back except for keyboard and pulled all the cards and no help. Only have one Ram card so could not eliminate this as a problem. Anybody got any ideas ?

Clearly a hard drive issue.  Post the EXACT error messages that you are getting.  How did you partition the boot drive, with what software?  Has it been partitioned this way a while, or is this a new setup?

If I get the Blue Screen I get a stop of 0x0000007E (0xc0000005,0x8056B0B9,0xF96795F4,0xF96792F0) and the first 2 are the only constant.

Otherwise I get the screen to prompt me to boot windows normally, last known configuration,or safe mode. Whatever I select it boots some drivers and then freezes or reboots.

If I do my reinstallation disk, it will load all the files and when it gets to the (starting windows) it will reboot and start over. It may stop while loading files in setup and last error message I got was: File \ie86 \ ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. The error code is 7. Setup cannot continue. Or it may stop and say some file is corrupted, usually a different file every time.

When doing diagnostics on hard drive, it will go so far and then stop and I get error: cr102 cannot read drive d. Have drive C formatted to NTFS and drive d to Fat 32.

Windows worked fine after partitioning the hard drive. I wrote Zero's to hard drive before partitioning and everything worked great installing windows.

Sorry about that.  Used my Dell  reinstallation disk. Used the utility from Maxtor to write zero's.

WHAT SOFTWARE DID YOU USE TO PARTITION THE HARD DRIVE?

Error Code 7 means the drive failed its self-test and should be replaced.

I believe your hard drive is failing, but would try these steps.

1) Reboot the computer and use Windows XP CD to delete the C and D partitions, make one new one, then format it, then abort the install.

2) Run Dell diagnostics.  If it passes, then repeat step 1, make two partitions, format both with NTFS.  Then proceed.

Your issue appears to be that the 2nd partition is formatted with FAT32, but that makes no sense so I think the drive is failing.

Hard Drive OK  Took drive out and installed in this computer and worked OK. Wrote Zero's to drive and formatted. Everthing checked out OK.

Also put in spare HD  and get same problems with that. Tried new HD cable and still no luck.

Honestly?  Sounds like it could very well be memory, especially if you have the same problem with a known good hard drive.  If you can swap memory, from another machine, I'd try that.  Could also be CPU or the HDD controller on the motherboard, but that is far more difficult to test.  Go with the memory.  If you need to and are in warranty, call tech support, and they'll probably ship you out a new stick.
 
And he said the error code 7 popped up during the installation; not related to the BIOS Quick Test (or 90/90's) which would indicate an HDD failure.
