Inspiron 1750 - HD error code 2000-0142

Hi, I have a problem with my Inspiron 1750 hard drive.

The initial error said to reseat the HD.  I did that and there is a problem loading windows--I'm given the option to start windows repair or start windows normally.  When I choose the repair option, it says it cannot perform the repair and then goes back to the same options (start windows repair or start windows normally).  When I choose start windows normally, it tries to load the files and then goes back to the same option.

I tried starting windows via the CD that came with the system, but I'm unable to see the hard drive.

I tried pressing the fn key when starting windows and the Hard Drive DST short test came up with the error 2000-0142.  When I repeat that test, I get 2000-0146.  The memory pre-boot test (that takes more than 1/2 hour) comes to completion with no errors.

Upon retrying the above, I received "A problem has been detected and windos has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've been this stop error screen, restart your computer.  If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.  If this is a new installation, ask your hardware of software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware of software.  Disable BIOD memory options such as caching or shadowing.  If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer press f8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

After I got this error, when rebooted, I went back to the same circle of not being able to start up and going to the repair or start windows normally options.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix this issue?

From the sound of it, it should be recoverable.  To attempt this, mount the faulty drive in an external case and attach it once the new drive is installed in the system and the system has been reloaded.

If the system is under warranty, call Dell with the error - they'll replace the drive under warranty.  If it's not, you will need a new 2.5" 9.5 mm SATA notebook drive to replace the failed one you have.

Thanks.  It's under warranty, and the HD replacement is on its way.

Does the error mean the drive is toast or might I be able to recover data from it?

Thanks much for the suggestion!  I have done that and can copy data off of it from a different computer.
