Inspiron CD/DVD issue
I am trying to help my brother in law with an issue. He purchased his laptop from Staples. Took it there when it had a virus and they reformatted the hard drive. The CD/DVD player shows (D drive) and when he runs diagnostics no issues are reports. We updated the BIOS and he has the latest drives for the device. However, he cannot play any CD/DVD. Any ideas?

I had completely overlooked the question. Sorry. I wasn't able to open anything from explorer at first. I went out and upgraded the firmware for the CD/DVD ROM and then I was able to open a CD from the windows Explorer. However, DVD wouldn't run. I upgraded Windows Media player and then started getting a codecs error. I downloaded another media player and didn't recieve any errors. Running like a champ.

Is there any remedy for this other than reformatting the hard drive again? Can the drivers be uninstalled/reinstalled in this order?

Hi sobosdonna,
You said you cannot play any CD or DVD. Does that mean the drive cannot read the contents of any disc in the drive, for example by using Windows Explorer?
One question. If you open device manager, do you see any question marks? That would indicate a device driver is not poperly installed.

There are no question marks in device manager. When you look at the specific device it indicates that it is working properly but it isn't. I appreciate any help you can offer!

Hello, I'm having trouble with my D drive. I ran a diagnostic test and received this "Error Code 0147" Then ran an optical drive o - self test and the message I received was "spindle test failed." I then ran the CR-ROM/DVD test then the computer beeped and went up/down a musical scale. Any assistance you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
