Inspiron E1505 Partition Problems
OK first I need to give some background. The HDD screws that came with my laptop(the ones that hold the drive in) were extremely poorly manufactured because both fell out without ever having a bump or ever having been unscrewed previously. Very annoying. I lost one and still have the other, but I have put it back in 3 times without having it stay for long. So because the screws were out, one day while I was at school I pulled my laptop out (it was in standby) and opened it up to work on something. Without the screws, the HDD had come out slightly and when the computer tried to come out of standby it blue screened. I rebooted and got the no HDD detected error before I realized the drive had come out. I popped it back in and rebooted again. Now it ran chkdsk for a long time and made a lot of fixes. So it finishes fine and I think I am in the clear, but now when I go into Windows I have all of the Dell hidden partitions showing up. What is more, on a fresh reboot or startup, after the XP loading screen (with the progress bar) the screen goes black and just hangs there for like 30-45 seconds. When it finally gets into Windows it is still very sluggish as it is apparently trying to do something more. Finally after about 10 minutes the computer works pretty much like normal other than having the extra partitions showing. This seems to be a Dell MBR issue, and I assume this accounts for the extra visible partitions and the lag as the laptop tries to find the correct primary partition. I have tried running chkdsk again, and I have tried using the Dell Repair Utility CD that is supposed to correct Dell MBR related issues, but this doesn't do anything. Anyone know how to fix my MBR issues without running a full recovery of the system? If you think this isn't MBR related then let me know what you think I should do. I am pretty stumped and really don't want to start doing any full recoveries.
