Install 2nd hard drive

Question

I'm putting a Western Digital 80 Gb hd in a D 8250. What is the difference between a 'cable select' setup and a 'master/slave' setup?

On one of the installation pages, it says to remove the primary hd and move it to the lower bay and put the seconday drive into the upper bay. Why, and is this really necessary?

Yes, moving the IDE hard drives, is due to the IDE cable limitations.

Do I really need to use the cable that came with the new WD; it says that we have to use that one?

If the exsistng IDE cable is 80 wire, then there's not need to replace it.

As it was explained to me, a master slave set up is when one drive is the primary drive. Whatever it needs to do gets done first and the slave gets second place. In cable select I was told that both drives will "battle it out" to see who goes first. I'm not sure about the bay location, but I would use the cables included with your harddrive b/c they are supposed to go with it.

Thanks. Whether I configure this as slave or use cable select, I don't need an operating system on this, right? I figure I can't configure it as master, cause Dell saw to it that we only get the 'Reinstallation CD', which I understand is not the full version of Windows XP.

yodelaehee   Yes.  But, no single 7200 rpm drive can deliver no more than about 66 mbps sustained, no matter what the interface.   Bev.

yodelaehee   You have been misinformed, the Dell XP reinstallation CD, is a full version of XP, but, it's tied to the Dell's BIOS.   No, for a second hard drive, you can use XP's Disk Management, to partition and format it.   Bev.

As I understand theCable Select (CS) setting, when two hard drives are installed and CS jumper is selected on both hard drives, master and slave hard drives are automatically determined. The hard drive connected to the end connector is the master hard drive and the hard drive connected to the middle connector is the slave hard drive.

Well, I left the jumpers where they were, so it looks like it's working. The Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools formatted it and everything. Is this the same as using the system tools in XP?

Dell says to switch the positions of the drives - the primary one in bottom bay. There's no way this would've possibly worked.
