Installing a DVD burner.

Hello! I am relatively new at the computer but decided to replace my DVD rom with a DVD burner. I also have an existing CD burner. I was told that the DVD burner should be designated as the master and the CD burner the slave. Looking at the existing setup between the DVD rom and the CD burner, they are both set on CS , (1) What is the CS connection ?, (2) How should I set up, should I move the jumpers to master and slave or set them both on CS ?.  Thank you.

Hi Amoreyou,
CS stands for Cable Select, which in a nutshell, it is a specially designed cable, which 99.9% are today, including Dell`s, which allows you set the jumper / shunt to CS for both drives and "location" on the cable determines Master / Slave, the "end" connection being Master. If Dell stayed true to form, you DVD-ROM will be in the Top bay, end connection CD/RW in Second bay, middle connection.
I would suggest you first go to Device Manager, select your DVD-ROM and click Uninstall (XP), shut the system down. Remove the DVD-ROM, set the jumper on the DVD/RW to CS, install. Turn her back on, XP should detect the drive and install the proper driver.
You should next review the software you intend to use.
Section 4 of the CD/RW link within my post has additional tips on installation as well as Dell`s Specification Pages for a number of their systems.

Best Regards
