Installing a new master drive

I need to replace my failing Maxtor drive (6L080L4) in my Dimension 4400. Does anyone know if I can keep this drive as a slave while I install the new drive as a master? I want to be able to transfer my data files from the Maxtor to my new Seagate and then reformat the Maxtor after the Seagate is installed as a Master. Should I take the Maxtor out, install the Seagate, set up the OS and system files then put the Maxtor back in?

Once I transfer the files from the Maxtor I intend to reformat it and just keep it as a slave.

Thanks Bev,

I'm thinking that I might run the Maxtor repair utilites on the drive and see if it's salvageable

BenBem.

You install the new Seagate HD first, followed by reinstalling the OS and all the applications, after it's operating to your satisfaction, then install the Maxtor on the middle IDE connector and transfer the files and data to the new drive.  If the Maxtor is failing, why would you wish to install it as the slave?

Bev,
I just ran the Maxtor Powermax utility. I did find problems with the drive and the utility seems to have corrected them. I did back up my system just in case.

I think I'll let it run for a few days and see what happens.

I also ran the Dell diags on the drive and they passed too.

BenBem.

You're Welcome.
Guess that, as a slave hard drive, it might be worth a try, but personally, I would not trust any drive that is failing.
