Installing a Sata DVD/Rom drive
Hi,
I've acquired a Dimension 3100, and the CD/DVD drive seemed inoperable (I reset the system to factory default, yet no luck). I purchased a DVD/Rom Sata drive, yet when I opened the case, there is only one Sata controller onboard, the H.D. is connected to this which I am keeping inplace, and the existing inop CD/DVD drive was running off the IDE controller. I'm familiar with IDE but Sata is new territory; would an Sata controller card work in this case, or is there a cable that allows master/slave config?

You could try the drive there.

obtain a SATA PCI expansion board, which may be what you want to do if you
use the drive on the existing spare SATA port and it does not work to your
satisfaction.
