Installing windows on an encrypted hard drive
I have been trying to install windows using several dell laptops and get the same error message on all of them. I have tried a Latitude D620, D820 and D830. The hard drive I am using is a Seagate Momentus 5400 FDE.2. I have tried setting a hard drive password since I have heard you have to do that to get it to take an image and it will not allow me to set the password (says it is unacceptable no matter what combination of passwords I use). I have upgraded all the bios'es to the latest version and still get the same error when installing:
An unexpected error (47873) occurred at line 5218 in d:\xpsprtm\boot\setup\setup.c.
Once I get that error it will let me proceed, but when I get to the screen that allows me to create a partition it will not create a partition or proceed to the next screen to install windows. I have also tried installing vista business and get the same issue. Again, this is an encryptable hard drive brand new. Have tried a 2nd hard drive that is identical and get the same errors. Any suggestions?

Get Gpart utility and take a look at the hard drive partition info. With it you should be able to partition it and format it then try installing Windows.
Also maybe try a linux install just to see if the drive works.
