L400 replacement HDD error message 'enter HD1 password'

Question

Hi there   Have the following L400 700mhz 250mb mem Bios A09   Trying to replace the current 4.3gb disk with a Seagate Momentus ST92011A 20GB   But I get the error message enter HD1 password This is the second drive I have tried but both come up with the same message  I have contacted Seagate and they say they do not have password protection on their disks. Dell seem to be saying that is is a disk issue, I know there was a bios update for some of the hitachi models and wondered if any one has successfully put a seagate 20g into thir L400   Cheers

Go into the BIOS setup and remove the hard drive password. Then install the new drive.

I tried that but when you put in the new hdd it says that is already set in the bios and to disable it you need the password which no one has and that Seagate say is not set at factory

Call Dell. Upon proof of ownership, they will provide you with a system-specific password. Use that to get in and remove the hard drive password.

Hi,

I have the same problem with a DELL Inspiron 2500 ans a HDD 40GB Seagate.

1 - I called Dell, same response
2 - I called Seagate, response "No password in Seagate HDD"

3 - I called Dell for second time, the technician give me a password generated with the serial number of the HDD.

What question do they ask you to proof your ownership? I purchsed my L400 from ebay. It comes with 10 GB drive. I want to replace with a bigger one. I noticed BIOS password is set but I don't have any manaul. Am I stuck with my 10 GB drive?

I have the same problem - I want to upgrade my HDD with a larger quieter model and I don't have the BIOS password. I think I need it to load the OS on the new drive as well as flash the BIOS.
