Maxtor HD ??

If been sifting thru the message board here this morning and have seen several posts stating don't use Maxtor drives.

Why are people advising against Maxtor lately?  Just issues with them wearing out?

Just had the smart system message advising the HD is going bad and ordered a new one from Dell yesterday.  Don't they still use Maxtor as the brand of choice?

I don't know about Maxtor drives. I am at this time waiting for the third Maxtor drive for a system. Turn around at this time is approximately one month. Installing the drive is not a problem. Re-installing OS/Programs and files along with other tweaking is.

I'm planning on upgrading OS from Home to Pro on the new HD.  So instead of copying and "upgrading" the OS I was going to do a fresh install.

Can anyone advise of any potential potholes to watch out for?

Thanks in advance.

No, Dell use a variety of drives. I think Maxtor went through a period where they had a higher than normal failure rate, but I'm not sure these problems still exist. Keep in mind that what you read here is "anecdotal evidence" and can be misleading.

Guess you'll find out, when it arrives.  You could open the case and check which make, you have presently installed.

It would help to post the computer model.

You could go to "Product Support" at the top of this page and let your cursor hover on the opened window and click "Reinstall Guide" and follow the prompts.

The issue with Maxtor hard drives is that for the past several years, they fail, more often then other brands. You could try Google for "Maxtor hard drive failures" and see what Google finds.  Dell several different makes of hard drives, including Maxtor. The most recent systems I received from Dell have Seagate.

The reason I ask is because I believe the one that is crapping out now is a Maxtor and I just ordered another drive via Dell listed as "Dell" and I don't particularly want another Maxtor if they are having continued problems.

I have pulled the two Segate drives that came w/my Dim9100 and installed a WD Raptor 74gB 10,000 rmp SATA drive. Pretty sweet.

Based on reveiws in several high level puter mags, I just got a 300gB Maxtor DiamondMax10.

I agree with Osprey--I had a Maxtor fail, but much to my satisfaction, Maxtor replaced it with an external [my preference, and which I love]. From what I've read the problems seemed to be limited to a particular product line [DiamondMax 8] as well as a manufacturing timeframe. I've got another Maxtor in my current system as well and so far so good [knock on wood].

New drive shipped by Dell is a WD.

I hope my slave HDD (Maxtor) doesn't fail anytime soon just bought it this spring.  I noticed it was a Diamond Max somthing when I pulled it out the other day.  I'll have to double check when I get home.  Diamond max 8 was the series that has had the most problems?

Any clue on the warranty length of these?

Congratulations, Western Digital hard drives are fine.

If you did not buy the hard drive from Dell, then you can go to Maxtors website,, enter the serial number and find the information about lenght of the warranty. When a hard drive is purchased from Dell, then the lenght of warranty is either, the same as the computer, or a one year warranty

I've read the Diamondmax 8s were the problem children.
