My CD/DVD drive doesn't work

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 with Windows XP SP2. A few months ago my CD/DVD drive stopped working. I put a disc in, it whirs around, then nothing. Nothing loads. When I go to Explore, there is no D: drive. HELP!

Thanks for the reply, but there is no CD/DVD listed in the Hardware tab. I've been through the troubleshooter, all the Control Panel options, downloads, and nothing works.

Look in the Device Manager .........

Start | Control Panel | System in classic view | Hardware tab | Device Manager

Click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Right-click the drive and select Properties.
Is there an Error Code (number) present?

That means the system does not think a drive is there.  The usual cause
is that the connect is faulty.  Remove the drive and reinstall it to see
if the connection can be restored.  Service Manual here ...............

Thanks for the info Skybird! I took the drive out, put it back in, and it works! Thanks again!

My DVD-RW on my Inspiron 1520 can't read some CD/DVDs. If the same disc is put into other Dell and non-Dell laptops, there's no problem in reading in. What should I do? Does that mean that the optical drive is faulty?
