does the light go green for a little bit and then just shut off completely? also can you play dvd's. i just encountered the same problem today too with my 700m. i can play dvd's fine though. prior to this happening i was ripping cd's into itunes.

yeah i have the same problem and i wonder if the use of itunes has something to do with it. for me, it happened in the middle of trying to rip a cd into itunes.

the same thing is with mine. I was using itunes to. What i found was that if you flip the labtop over it will load the cd

Have had the same problem, read this thread, so I uninstalled iTunes.

so your cd issue went away but did you reinstall itunes?

No, I did not.  Not on the notebook, at least.

I have iTunes installed on a desktop (non-Dell), and the CD-RW on that machine is unaccessible.  It seems inherent to iTunes.

i uninstalled itunes and then tried to play a cd on my cd drive and it still didn't work. maybe i just have a bad cd drive but the strange thing is that the dvd still works. go figure...
