My OS keeps Crashing!!

I have a Dell Latitude LS
500mhz 6GB 128mb

I am running on Windows ME

This OS is always crashing, I don't think there has been a time that I used this computer that it didn't crash and sometimes files get damaged and I can't even get on the windows and I have to reformat the HD and reinstall windows. SO I lose everything.

I am wandering if it is my HD that has alotta problems or is this OS known for crashing all the time?

I am about to upgrade to a new 20GB Travelstar HD and Hopefully this will take care of all my problems, I can't keep on putting up with this constant crashing, I have lost very important information, and I may lose my job if this continues to happen. i even requested a newer updated Laptop, with windows XP on it, and explained to them my problem, Hopefully that will get a positive response.

It could be a hardware problem I had used windows me for about three years with very few crashes (only when I ran too many programs at once)
currently my windows xp pro crashes more than me used to

well, I think maybe the problem is taken care of now. I got a new HD and a cooling pad for my laptop. I think it was overheating and the cooling pad is helping it stay cool by getting rid of that heat. It maybe that I got a new 30gb hd. Whatever it was I think I have taken care of it.
