N E C 2510A

just purchased a NEC 2510 A DVD player rewriter that l want to fit into my Dell8200 where l have currently a Samsung 616 DVD player fitted. Question is should l firstly uninstall the Samsung and how? Will the cabling to the Samsung suit the NEC? and is it easy to remve the Samsung from its housing and fit in the Nec. Also will my windows XP Home automacticlly reconise the new NEC.

Apprecieate any help you can offer please. Regards Denny1

Hi Denny,

You have some options.  You can leave the Samsung as is and add the NEC
to the second bay and use the existing cable the Samsung is on.  Each
IDE cable will support two drives.  Your Service Manual for Adding and
Removing Parts is here ...........

Another option that many Users here like is to install the NEC in the
top bay and move the Samsung to the second bay, still using the same cable.
With Cable Select that Dell uses, it will make the NEC the Master and the
Samsung the Slave.

Either way, before you install the new drive, make sure it is jumpered as
Cable Select (CSEL or CS).  The position on the cable will then determine
the Master and Slave.

Hi Denny,

Removing / Uninstalling the drive from Device Manager is "not set in stone" but you will find the Regulars that frequent this area will recommend you do, simply reduces the chance of conflicts and takes less than minute.

Best Regards
