Need help installing a DVD R/RW drive
I have a dell dimension 3000 with a regular compact disk drive can i install a DVD R/RW? I will just replace the cd drive. I see only 2 cords connecting to the reg compact disk and there is space for 4 on my DVD R/RW are those optional(the digital cable and audio cable) and if not where are they in my tower..lol Thanks for the help

Hi Chllybrd,
Yes, you can install a DVD/RW in your 3000.
Here is the Dell User Guide:
Dell 3000 series
Most of our Regulars tend to prefer the DVD/RW setting in the Top Bay, jumpered as Cable Select.
Go to Device Manager, select your current CD drive, click Uninstall, shut down. Open the case and move this drive to the "middle" bay and attach the "middle" connection on the IDE cable to this drive; then set the jumper on the new DVD/RW to Cable Select, install it in the Top Bay, attach the "end" connection of the IDE cable to this drive. Also attach the spare power cable.
Boot your system.

install the second drive on the same cable as the first drive.
Jumper it as Cable select. The floppy drive is not an IDE
device, so leave it alone. The biggest problem you may face
is figuring out which drive is which in the different software
programs you have on you system.

Hi Tommy,
Mike~Skybird and John~Osprey, we cover for one another in this little conference and those guys do an excellent job.
Normally, using the Cable Select jumper feature, Windows will assign the drive in the Top Bay, the first available drive letter, D: then E: for the next drive, some changed the drive letter of E: to something like "M" to help them recognize the drives better, just a thought.
