Need Help new HDD

Hi
 
I just bought a WD 250 gig HD and i am having alot of trouble getting my computer to recognize more then 137 gig of the 250.I have a GX1 running win xp pro.Please if anyone can help me with this problem and get this HD installed it would be greatly appreciated.And if anyone can help if they could explain for a amateur computer guy like myself.Thanks in advance to everyone for their help.

Sorry, but without special software (supplied by the disk manufacturer) it won't work - 137 Gbytes is the limit on the GX1.  Note that there is also a bios display limitation of 65535 Mbytes.  If you can't get suitable large disk enabling software, you'll have to add a PCI HDD interface card, which will also up the interface to ATA100 or ATA 133 speeds as well.  Make sure you get one known to work on the GX! (search on the forum - certain SIIG and Promise ones have been reported to work); generic ones don't tend to work on the GX1.....

Thanks for your reply and do you mean software disk that came with the HDD because i have that disk and still won't work.So my only other option you say is to get the card and that would do the trick?thanks again

A PCI card is likely to do the trick.  Look through this forum for reported successes with the SIIG and PROMISE controllers, or make sure that if you buy a controller and it doesn't work you can take it back.  You might need a newer controller that works with such a large HDD...
