Need some RAID Help
Need some help / Advice on how to proceed on installing a RAID 0. I have done searches to answer most of my questions, but these still remain – any help is appreciated.
This is what I have.
1. Dell Dimension 4550, w/the 533 MHz FSB MB
2. 2 Maxtor 80 GB (8 MB Cache) HD's (60$ for both after rebate
)
1. Is there any inherent weakness in the PCI bus on the motherboard, that would make installing a RAID setup a bad idea
2. Does it matter which slot I use to plug in the PCI Card?
3. If it does matter, which is the best one to plug into
4. Is there anything wrong with using this card? I’m trying to do this on the cheap, since I’ll be getting a new computer in the next year, with SATA, so why invest a lot of money?

Hi,
I personally try to avoid to use the PCI-bus and a PCI-controller to connect harddrives in a PC. The new harddrives are now so fast (up to 100Mb/sec) that the PCI-bus (133Mb/sec) can be a bottleneck when you connect a RAID set to this bus. The native chipset IDE-controllers do not use this PCI-bus. On the other hand if you really need RAID... I added a PCI-IDE RAID controller (Adaptec) to my Precision 210 Workstation to get a Mirror-set in this PC (works as a ISA-Server on my network and i want to be save). Why do you want or need RAID in your PC?
You can use any free PCI-slot you want for a PCI RAID controller, keep in mind that this bus is limited to 133Mb/sec so if you have other PCI-cards that can uses a lot of bandwith like a firewire card, USB-2.0 card or a TV-card this can be a problem. Do you use your PC for games, video-editing or other heavy programs?
