New cd drive install..NEED HELP
I'm not very computer literate, so bear with me. I have a dell 8100, bought a new cd drive, cause other one quite working after best buy worked on computer. Anyhow, fiance installed the new drive, don't know what he did, but what is supposed to be the E drive is coming up as the F drive, and the F(cd-rw) drive is coming up as the E drive. What do I have to do to get it to the way it's supposed to be. Just remember, I'm not too good at working on these things-- DETAILS PLEASE. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU !!!

1. Go to the control panel and click on Performance and Maintenance
2. Click on Administrative Tools
3. Open up Computer Management
4. Click on Disk Management (located under Storage in the console tree)
5. Right click "E" (The CDRW) drive and select "Change Drive Letters and Paths"
6. A window will pop up with the drive letter in it, select change.
7. Change it to a drive letter that you are not currently using.
8. Repeat these instructions for the "F" (New CD Drive) drive and change that one to "E"
9. Now go back to the other drive (The original "E" (CDRW) drive before the changes just made) and change that drive's letter to "F"

To add with James, these are the actual Microsoft articles on the subject. Please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 100, article 73 for the instructions for Windows XP and Section 20, article 11 for the previous Windows versions.

Hi Hanna,
One of the issues that may pop up, example if you installed a game that requires the use of a disc, the program will first look for the drive letter where it was originally installed. So you may have to re-direct it.
