Hi Ed,
I agree with KO, and the majority of Regulars as well usually keep the CD/RW and remove the DVD-ROM.
To add with KO`s install, Dell ships their systems using the Cable Select Feature, so you can set the jumper / shunt on the new drive to CS and place on the same location as the DVD-ROM or set it to MS (Master) but then you should change the jumper on the CD/RW to SL (Slave).
For additonal information as well as Dell Specification Pages for for their systems, click on the CD/RW gif in my post and scroll to Section 4.
Good luck with the drive and have a Happy Holiday Season.

Question: I'm doing the exact same thing. I installed mine last night and no problems encountered...yet. Do we have to upgrade the firmware on the new drives... how does one verify the current firmware version on their DVD+RW NEC1100?

Hi Bgegner,
I am a firm believer in "If it isn`t broken, don`t fix it" theory.
For now test the drive and see how it works with DVD+RW media.
To check your current firmware, click on the CD/RW gif in my post and scroll to Section 8-3, article 9.
Seasons Greetings !
