No DVD Audio

Question

I'm having problems with my DVD player.  It loads fine and shows video but I have absolutly no audio.  It plays cds fine.   I've check all the volume settings I can find and they are all on.  I've also tried windows media player and interactual player and still nothing.  I even upgraded to Media Player 10 (from 9 so it replaced everything).  Nothing I do seems to work.  Good quality video.. just no audio.  I can even hit the mute button in media player and hear the hiss go away.   Anybody got any ideas what else to check?   I'm using an I8600 with the modular DVD-RW drive, and XP pro.

if your sound card isn't integrated, it mat have jiggled out of place. if not, do you have a PC card slot? if so, buy a sound card that goes into your PC card slot. make sure that what ever you are watching your videos on, for instance WinDVD, make sure ITS volume is up.

Nope.. its integrated. Even at that.. I'm getting sound for everything else.. including cd audio. Its got to be some kind of software (codec or driver maybe?) issue. The windows media player and intervideo dvd player use the wav channel for volume.. they control it just fine but it seems like there is just no audio being decoded.

I'm pretty sure that these laptops use software decoding instead of hardware for dvds. I'm trying to find my PowerDVD disk but I can't find it and all I can find on here is the upgrade files. The only thing I can think of that may have messed the codecs is the new update of itunes (4.9) or quicktime 7. Both of which I have installed since the last time I watched a dvd. I cannot roll back to before those installs though...

Any other ideas?

Have a search on the Web for a programme called gspot.
It will tell you if you require a codec for playing your DVDs. That being said, your PowerDVD software should have already installed the correct codec.

Well, gspot told me that I could play it. It said the audio was being decoded by a nero codec. Appearantly that wasn't working. I still can't find my powerdvd disk so I downloaded the trial version and viola... it works great.. even in windows media. Gspot now tells me its using the CyberLink Audio Decoder.

Now i've got 30 days to find my Dell PowerDVD disk before this trial runs out :(. Thanks for the help everybody.
