# of Partitions?

I'm replacing the drive on my I-8200 next week with a new 80 gig Toshiba. I won't be using the Dell restore disk, rather doing a clean XP Pro installation.  How many partitions are optimal, and what sizes? I'm leaning toward two partitions, one for the operating system and the other for documents.  Any suggestions?

I would personally just make one partition, install your operating system and all your programs then use Acronis True Image to make a backup of your system which you can burn onto DVD.

You can also use the Acronis program to make incremental backups on to a secure zone on your hard drive should in case you need to restore quickly.

I have experimented with a different number of partitions and I have been using two for the past 4 years. In the first partition I have the operating system, in the second one I keep My Documents, Favorites, Outlook pst, etc. I also use two different back up methods: for my OS I use an imagins software (Acronis TrueImage) and for my data I have been using a number of different solutions (currently I am testing Microsoft OneCare and I am pretty happy with it as it is incredibly simple to use).

The advanta of this method is that if you need to wipe the OS, you don't need to worry about the data and viceversa. I also keep the latest OS image on the second partition in case I am on the road and the system does not boot anymore  (I store older images on DVDs).
