Optical drive disappears

I have an XPS Gen 2 notebook with Vista.  A few weeks ago, my optical drive disappeared.  First, I uninstalled the drive in Device Manager and then restarted my computer.  At the desktop, windows tried to install the driver (it recognized that there was new hardware), but it failed (under properties in device manager it stated error code 10).  Secondly, I ran through Dell diagnostics, which noted the failed drive.  I also tried taking the optical drive out and reinstalling, but it didn't help.

Next, I called Dell support and they told me to delete upper and/or lower filters.  I did that and the drive came back.  However, two days later, it was gone again.  After deleting the filters five days in a row, I called support back and they sent me a new optical drive because I was having to delete filters every time I started my computer.  Now, this new optical drive is doing the same thing.

Help!  Is there something else I can try, other than zapping my hard drive and starting all over?
Thanks.
The optical drive is an Optiarc 5540A.
