OptiPlex 760 BIOS - SATA Operation
The SATA Operation feature in my system BIOS is set to ATA because Windows XP would not install with it set to AHCI.
I have heard that this setting cannot be changed once the OS is installed (that is, it CAN be changed but the OS won't run anymore). I'm about to move to Windows 7 and I would like to make use of the AHCI advanced operation of my machine. When exactly should that switch be made? My plan is to switch it to AHCI, re-partition and reformat the HDD (booting from a diskette), and then install Windows 7. Will that work? Will DOS work alright to partition and format the drive in AHCI mode?
Thanks.

I would do the re-partitioning before you exit out of windows. Once done boot into the bios change your SATA setting to AHCI then install 7 you can format the partitions during the install.
