Optiplex GX1 wont recognize my 40 Gig. 20 Gig is the master.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX1 and right now it has just one hard disk which is set as master. It is a 20 Gig drive, seagate I think. Anyway, I just bought a 40 Gig Maxtor and want to install it in the computer but at the same time be careful not to interrupt the data I have stored on the 20. Ideally I would like to make the 40 my master drive and leave the 20 for storage but not change any information on the 20 and still be able to operate it as a separate system. Is this possible? I understand that the Optiplex GX1's onboard controller can handle up to 127 Gigs but the bios has limitations. I am really green when it come to bios and updating them, in fact im pretty green when it comes to computers in general. I just updated some bios to A10 from A01 and I am running Windows 98se. What the..! can I do? Any definitive procedure?!!

Make sure all drives are set at cable select.

Dude Thanks!

I am a little confused about the application of the Cable select settings though. For example what is the benefit of cable select? If I have cable select mode will I be able to run 2 separate bootable operating system hard disks from the same computer without having to physically disconnect or disconnect the cables and if so how can i instruct it as to which operating system or disk i want it to boot to at any given time? Otherwise what benefits does cable selected drive chain offer above master and slave?

Thanks!

Dells like cable select.

If you went SCSI, then you could select which drive is the boot, within the SCSI BIOS+

U160 Mb/s is a much faster I/O than ATA-33

Thanks VX!

Noted. I noticed that at the 73 Gig mark scsi fights for place with a 200 m/s firewire or raid hard disk. Any knowledge of the format of this hard disk and what you might hafve heard about its thoroughput?
