Optiplex GX240

Hi there, i couldnt find where to put this message so here it is! I have a dell Optiplex gx240. Currently it has a 20GB Seagate Hard drive in it but i have been trying to install a new Maxtor 40GB. The bios will not recognise this drive at all. I have the jumper set to CS (cable select) it is on the primary channel.just a straight swap from the old to the new and it isnt happening.

When i put the new drive in to be detected it doesnt detect my CDRW drive, but if the old drive is in it does. I have requested that automatic IDE detection happens, it goes through the stage of detecting, but then comes back boot error etc, strike f1 to retry boot or f2 for setup.

How do i get this drive in!

Thanks!

Sounds like you might have a DOA drive, which wouldn't be unusual for Maxtor.

Try a new data cable first, though.

Uhhhh......yeah. Look, I just dropped a new Maxtor 10 gig in an GX1 set as Master and..........no problems at all. Try setting it to Master, I have heard the CS select stuff, but mine works fine on Master. If it auto-detects and posts the HD, but doesn't find the CD-RW, set the CD-RW to Slave if they are on the same data cable, and if they are NOT, set them both Master/Master.

If nothing else happens after that, THEN it may be a dead drive, possibly. Just my 2 cents........
