outlook slows my computer

i have a dell inspiron 8500.
my outlook has slowed to a crawl and pretty much doesn't allow me to work on other programs when it is receiving messages.

I have run dell diagnostics, file clean-up, spyware, registry mechanic and disk defragmantion and nothing helps.

I auto archive the files in outlook. when I check the cpu it doesn't say the outlook is a hog - it says the system idle is, but I know that when mail comes in everything else stops working. I run IE and dreamweaver while my outlook is open.

i have 768 MB of RAM. what's the problem here?

Try temporarily disabling the email interceptor in Norton. Does that solve the issue?
