Partition Magic vs. Microsoft Disk Management
What does Partition Magic offer that Windows XP Disk Management doesn't. Should I buy Partition Magic. Also in a 200GB external Maxtor hard drive what is the optimun partition size. I'd like three partitions.

I've only had 'Partition Magic' a short time, so others may know more.
It can resize partitions (make them bigger or smaller) and it can move partitions around. I don't think you can do that in 'Disk Management'.
I'm sure it does lots of other tricks that others can tell you about.

Sherr,
If you try to use Windows Disk Mangagement to resize, create new, or otherwise manipulate the partitions on an existing hard drive, it will erase everything on the drive. Partiion Magic can do all of these things non-destructively. On a new hard drive with nothing on it, then Disk Management will be adequate, since you will not be erasing the drive. Partition sizes are a matter of personal preferences - how you work, how you back things up, etc. determines optimal partition sizes. Why do you want to partition the second hard drive?

Partiton Magic has been a great product, but you should be aware that there have been problems with version 8 and XP. If you purchase the program be sure you update it with the most recent patch. An excellent alternative you might want to consider is this:

I was planning to partition into three sections. Two eighty GB and one 40GB. One for photos. One for back up and one for all other files. Disk Manager tell me that my existing 60 GB hard drive is set the following way:
39MB FAT CIS and 55.8GB NTFS. I thought that with XP NTFS was the most desireable. And what happened to the remaining four GB.
Does anyone know?
