Hello to anyone out there that can help me i bought a second hand dell latitude in great working order and haven't had a problem till now, we bought a cd rom for it and took the hard drive out and it worked fine 4 a few weeks then my husband was on the net one night as he had been many times before was fiddeling with the computer has pressed the wrong thing and now when we turn the power on it tells us this:

This computer system, #TT6DC**-D35B, is protected by a password authentication system. You cannot access the data on this computer without the correct password.

Please type in the primary or administrator password and press .

The person who previously owned it didnt set up any passwords on it and dell couldnt help us well thats what they said. So if anyone knows what is going on please help me. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bec Farrelly

If the person who previously owned it was the original owner that Dell has on record, he can do a Transfer of Ownwership to you with Dell and then they will be able to help. If he is not the owner of record with Dell, then you are out of luck.

I tried to take the hard drive from a Compaq laptop and install it an a Dell CPx J and got the same error.

I don't understand quite what triggered the Dell to ask for a password given that the Compaq never did.

Could someone explain ?

It sounds like your BIOS has a password installed.  Your husband may have accidentally activated the password.  Irregardless of how it happened there is only one Dell approved way to remove the password.  Just as the other member suggested you'll have to get the original owner to either transfer the ownership or have him/her call Dell with the correct information to receive the fix.  Dell will need the owner's name, the machine's service tag, invoice number, and possibly address, etc.  Dell is sensitive (rightly so) to this issue and will ban members that ask or give ideas for any other means of defeating the password.   So don't ask.  Good luck.

DUCATO,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

You will need to contact us via phone and give proof of ownership, and then we can help you recover the password.
