PC does not detect dvd rewriter.

I have a dimension 2400, and the cd rom stopped working after I had to re-boot the pc.  I thought there was a problem with the cd rom so I bought a new one.  Took out the old cd rom, put in the new dvd rewriter, checked the cables.  But nothing happened when I turned the computer on.  I thought it would be automatically detected??  When I go to my computer, there is no cd/dvd present.  Nor is it in the bios.  Think I may need the drivers or something, but I'm not sure where to get the correct ones.  The new dvd rewriter is an LG one, but there web site only has upgrade drivers, not the whole lot.
Please help, its driving me mad!!

Check these commonly overlooked things:
  1. Set the drive jumper to cable select.
  2. Boot to the BIOS and make sure the drive is detected.
  3. Boot to XP and you should see it now.

This does not work.  I realised that it is installing itself as a floppy disk drive!  When I delete it and restart the PC it then says 'found new hardware' and installs as a floppy again.

Sorry, did you check the jumper and BIOS settings as I suggested?

Yes, I did try the jumper and bios. Nothing changed.

Reset NVRAM.
  • Reboot system and enter the BIOS Setup by pressing F2. 
  • Turn on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and  Num Lock.
  • Press ALT+ E then ALT+ F then ALT+ B
