Philips DVD8631 burning problems
Here is my system: Dell 8400 (Brand New) 3.4GHZ, 160GB HD, 512MB Ram, Philips DVD8631 DVD burner.
I have downloaded the latest firmware from the Dell site (CD-21) and I cannot burn a DVD. I am using Sonic Record Now version 7.3. When I try to burn an ISO file to a blank DVD, the burning(or copying) process starts and take over an hour to complete. Problem is all it is doing is copying the ISO to a blank DVD and not actually burning it. I also have NERO 5.5 and it will not recognize the Philips DVD8631, all it will recognize is an Image Recorder device. Any help getting my burner to recognized in NERO? In my old Dell 8100 with a Pioneer A05 burner I never had this problem. No instructions or guides came with this computer to use the Philips DVD8631. I'm beginning to think this is an inferior burner or I am doing something wrong. Thanks for you help in advance.

Hi Lonnier,
Unfortunately the 8631 has gotten off to a rough start, the firmware update did help some Members but not all. At this point you should contact Dell bye phone, explain the problem and that you did try the Dell Firmware, more than likely Dell will replace the drive.
As for Nero, if perhap you have XP`s SP2 installed, you need version 6, 5.5 does not seem to work.

Hi Lonnier,
I hope Nero 6 works, some Members have reported problem with Sonic, mostly Sonic`s DLA program, if you have it (DLA) installed, please consider uninstalling it before adding Nero 6 and do post back, feedback is always welcome and needed!

Thanks for your reply. I am due to receive NERO 6 today. I will install it tonight and see if the burner works with it. If not, I will call Dell.

Jeff,
Thanks for your input. Nero 6 did the trick, I burned a DVD at 8X without any problems. However, my regular CD-Rom HL-DT-ST GCR-8483B has stopped working. It will not launch a game, play an audio or anything. Any suggestions here?

Hi Lonnie,
You did uninstall Sonic`s DLA program, correct?
It may just be a driver issue, use Windows "fix-all", uninstall the drive from Device Manager and re-boot.
