primary hard disk failure - no boot device !

I have an Inspiron 600m and recently when booting I have gotten the error message

"primary hard disk drive 0 failure'

"no boot device found"

etc.

 

This has happened a couple times. last time I unplugged the computer and removed the battery. After a few times, it loaded normally. I had gotten alot of "low disk space" warning messages before all of this happened. So once I booted the computer. I removed all of my pictures from the drive by saving them on cd. There were a lot of pictures so I was hoping that I had fixed the problem. However, the computer has done the same thing with the same error message.

What is this, what can I do?
