Problem installing new hard drive.

when ever thats a simple issue even i faced the same problem when i was trying to install the optical drives.All you have to do is remove the jumper from one of the hard drive that is the new drive and keep it as secondary and connect the hard disk with the o/s as the primary drive with jumper for master.your issue will be resolved.

In the future, by using the Advanced Forum Search on the bottom of this page, you can quite easily find the answer to this often asked question.

1) Dell computer hard drives should be jumpered as CABLE SELECT.

2) You CANNOT install a drive with an OS already on it.  You'll need to reinstall the OS on the 8250.

Do NOT set it as slave.  CABLE SELECT...

I guess I misunderstood, but I reset both drives to cable select. Boot-up still did not work. Even when I shut off the connection for the 2nd drive through the BIOS it doesn't read either drive as long as the new drive is connected. I know this seems like a simple problem, but I haven't found a solution for it yet.

The boot drive should be on the end of the data cable, and the OS installed while on this machine.

The secondary drive should be on the middle of the data cable.

Both jumpered as Cable Select.

Both turned to AUTO in bios.

The big drive requires the latest bios AND Windows XP SP1 or higher to recognize it.  Depending on what you formatted it with, it may or may not be visible to XP.
