Problem Playing Blu Rays In 17r!
I bought two 17r laptops recently and they both seem to have a problem playing blu ray dvds! I can get a movie like 300 to play fine but another movie like Avatar won't play at all! Another blu ray movie would play but would have vertical lines show up across the screen during playback. Both 17r's do the same thing so I think it's a hardware problem. I am using cyber link power dvd. Maybe there a better player out there for playing Blu rays? If anyone else has experience with the 17r and playing blu rays please let me know! Thanks.

Hi Rebbie2,
There are a number of blu-ray threads you should look at, such as this one. Toward the end of the thread, one forum member suggested installing a trial version of PowerDVD 9 or 10. If that works, then try calling Dell and requesting a disc for the newer version.

I need to update what happened with me. Dell called me back and told me that they do not have Power DVD version 10 yet but they did have version 9.5 which they shipped to me. I installed Cyberlink Power DVD 9.5 and my blu ray discs play perfectly now! I have to admit that Dell has been very helpful in resolving this problem and they were always quick to call me back to see how things were going. I am glad that I was able to resolve this problem. Just ask for Power DVD 9.5 and you will be fine. Good Luck.

Thanks OSPREY4! I will give it a try. I sure hope it works! It really stinks to pay for two brand new Dell Laptops that you paid extra for to have a Blu ray player so you could play Blu rays discs, and then not have them play! I'll let you know if it works.

OSPREY4 I just downloaded Cyberlink's Power DVD 10 trial version and my computer now plays Blu Ray discs perfectly!!! Dell called me earlier to see if they could help me fix the problem with not being able to play Blu Ray DVDs on my Dell Inspiron 17r. I told them that I had done my own research and that I was going to try downloading the trial version of Power DVD 10. They said they would call back tomorrow to see how I made out. I told them that if it works I would like them to send me a free full version of Power DVD 10! He said that he will look into it and see if he can do that! I sure hope Dell techs read this forum! I was never able to play Blu Ray discs on my Inspiron 17r until now!! I sure hope Dell sends me a copy of Power DVD 10!! This solves all problems with playing Blu Ray DVDs! Thanks again OSPREY4!

Good to hear. Please post back and let me know how it goes with Dell support. If necessary, call them again.

osprey4 Dell called me back today to find out if the upgrade to Power DVD 10 worked. I told them that Power DVD 10 now plays all Blu Ray dvds perfectly! They said they were happy to hear that and will speak to who ever he has to and see if they can ship me the full version of Power DVD 10. I only have the trial version which will expire in 30 days, so I sure hope Dell can do this for me. It only seems the right thing to do since the version they shipped me is useless in playing Blu ray discs! I will let you know what happens. Thanks again for the help!

I have had the exact same experience. Same computer, problem, and "solution". I had been back and forth with Dell Support for over a week trying different things. They were sending me a new DVD/Blu ray drive when I finally decided to download PowerDVD Trial Version 10. Works perfectly now, but the trial is expiring soon (I think the trial time was only 10 days for me). Dell has also sent mePowerDVD DX 8.1 on two different occasions. I'm not sure why because it just upgrades to V8.3.1.6107 which is the same thing I had to begin with. I cancelled the drive replacement and told them that V10 does the trick. One person told me that Dell does not have an agreement in place with Cyberlinkto supply V10 to customers. He suggested I search the internet for the necessary codecs or wait for a solution from Dell/Cyberlink. Another said they would send out a working version right way (which is when I got the second V8.1 disc). The last person I talked to said they would check "inventory" for V10 Full and get back to me tomorrow. We'll see how that goes. I'll be curious to find out what you hear. Hopefully we can get this sorted out before Blu ray is obsolete. Good luck!

Same thing here. Problem solved! Got version 9.5 from Dell yesterday. All my DVDs and Blu-rays work now. The interface is a little nicer too. Very happy to have the issue resolved. Thanks.

I recently purchased a refurbished 17r and it came automatically with the PowerDVD 9.0. However, I was not given the installation CD for it or any of the drivers. And 9.0 is not working properly. Earlier it was playing a Blu-ray in black and white. Then it told me the Blu-ray disc was the not the right format. Then I got it to start loading only for it to get to 100% and then it just stops without playing (there is a little box that opens and says "stopped."

Hi IAHoosier,
You can order replacement discs from the main support site, and you should also have access to "My Dell Downloads" for all of the installed applications.
