Problem with my cd/dvd drive

I ran a system test on my Inspiron E1405 laptop and received the following message:

Error Code: 0F00:137B

Message:  IDE device failed Blank media or no media is present in optical drive. Test requires media with data(installation CD).

When I check my device manager, I see the device (HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GSA-T11N ATA device) listed with a yellow mark that indicates that may be the driver is corrupt.  When I uninstall the device and try to add a new device, the system does not recognize the cd/dvd device.  It reappears on the device manager list when I reboot.

Any ideas?

If the error code in device manager is 39 then use the registry fix for the upper and lower filters in the link below.

Yes, the error was 39.  I followed the instructions and the CD/DVD drive works great.  Thanks a lot.

Hi MOUROU,

Error code 0F00: 137b indicates "Blank media or no media is present in optical drive". It means to complete the test on Optical drive, you would need to insert a CD/DVD in the Optical drive.

Could you please check the 'Device Manager' of computer if there is any yellow exclamation or red cross on the Optical drive.

You can access the 'Device Manager' by following the steps below:

  • Click on “Start” and right click on “Computer”.
  • Click on “Manage”.
  • Click on “Device Manager”.
  • Under “CD/DVD ROM Devices”, you will find the Optical drive listed.

If there is any yellow exclamation mark, you can remove the upper lower filters by running a Microsoft Fix-it for this issue from the link: http://bit.ly/QCZ40B

Note: Above step is going to alter the registry settings of the computer. Before you proceed, you can either back up the registry settings or can create a restore point. You can get detailed information on creating the restore point from link: http://bit.ly/RrpN1Q

Once you click on the link for Microsoft Fix it --> Click Run Now --> Save the file --> Double click on it --> and follow the prompts.

If the issue still persists, you can follow the steps below:

  • Click 'Start', and then click 'All Programs'.
  • Click 'Accessories', and then click 'Run'.
  • Type 'regedit', and then click 'OK'. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click 'Allow'.
  • In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

  • In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note: You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.

  • On the 'Edit' menu, click 'Delete'.
  • When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click 'Yes'.
  • In the right pane, click 'LowerFilters'.
  • On the 'Edit' menu, click 'Delete'.
  • When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click 'Yes'.
  • Exit Registry Editor.
  • Restart the computer and see if the issue still persists.

If there is no yellow exclamation mark, you can update the firmware of the Optical drive from the link: http://dell.to/VAdhuh

Steps to install the firmware:

  1. Download the file.
  2. Unzip the files to a directory on your hard drive.
  3. Double click on the flash utility (SFDWIN.exe).
  4. Click on "Download File Open" button at left corner.
  5. Click on DE04.bin to select it.
  6. Click on "Open".
  7. Click on "Start Download" button at middle.
  8. Click on "Restart Windows".
  9. System will restart after flash is complete.

Check if the issue still persists.
