Problem with NEC ND1100A
Hello,
I own a GX270 with a "bundled" NEC ND1100A DVD+RW drive. Until now I had only used the drive for burning CD-R and CD-RW discs.
Ten days ago I tried to burn a DVD+R for the first time, and it has been a nightmare. I've tried with the Easy CD Creator 5 that came with the drive (I have updated this software to latest release), with Nero, with DeepBurner, with CDBurnerXP Pro (a very nice piece of freeware), and I always arrive at the same problem.
I can open a first session (I want to burn multiple sessions), add files to it and burn it. This works perfectly. But... whenever I try to add a new session or close the DVD, it isn't being recognized by the software (none of the programs I tried). I can't read the volume with the Windows Explorer, either. It simply shows an empty listing. The funny thing is that I have tried the same procedure with a different computer (and with another brand of DVD drive installed) and it works nicely.
I suspect that there is something wrong with the drive, but this doesn't sound logical, because I can burn CDs and the first session of the DVDs, but not the subsequent.
Any hints are greatly appreciated.

Hi Miguel,
Dell released a firmware update to address problems with this drive, check the Downloads link under the Product Support Tab above, enter information for your system and follow the link to Removable Media Storage Devices.
Also click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to section 8-3, article 11 for a few tips / suggestion from our Members on this drive.

hi Miguel,
Unfortunately my friend this drive has not faired well here, the Members that seemed to have a good drive, have been saying they are getting about a year out of it.
If the drive is out of warranty, the Dangerous Brothers have a firmware that converts the drive to a NEC 1300, some stated it even "fixed" their problems, but I cannot confirm this and I must state ( for Dell ) that the use of it will void the warranty on the drive and you use at your own risk.

Hi Miguel,
Actually the Retail drives are pretty good, the NEC 2500 and 3500 both seem to work well.

thanks. That's good to know. I always thought that NEC was a reliable brand, but you never know. I will check whether mine is out of warranty before trying with the update.

thanks for the additional information.
So far I have been unable to solve the problem. The Spanish DELL customer service has sent me a list of tests I have to run in order to locate the source of the problem. As for now all were negative (I could not read DVDs).

I have that drive too. Under the dell downloads and update tab for this drive this is what the firmware states that it fixes. 10ge

Yes, I tried with closed DVDs, too. I burned them with CDBurnerXP Pro (a very nice piece of freeware: http://www.cdburnerxp.se/) selecting the "Burn and close" option. Afterwards I was unable to read the contents of the data DVDs. :-(
Previously I had had the same problems as you with Easy CD Creator.

PS I have updated the firmware to 10GE with negative result
