Problems with DVD RW Drive
Hi there.
I have an Inspiron 1521 with Vista (I'm not very good with the technical stuff so I'll try my best to explain :emotion-42:) I can't seem to burn cds and dvds and sometimes there's a problem playing dvds. Playing cds works just fine but every time I try to burn a cd or dvd they just end up blank. The burning process is normal and doesn't indicate any problems, but the when I go to play the burned cds they are completely blank. I've tried it a couple more times since then using different programs (itunes, windows media player, etc) and it's always the same thing. Also when I insert a dvd the drive makes weird noises and the dvd isn't detected and doesn't play. The drive is a TSST corp DVD+-RW TS-L632D . I've checked for updates but there don't seem to be any. It's getting to be very frustrating so any suggestions on how to fix the problem will be greatly appreciated.

I suspect the dvd drive is failing/failed.
If it's under warratny get a new one from Dell. If not you need to buy a new one or good used one from ebay which will be way cheaper.
Also in mean time run the Dell diagnostics on the dvd drive.

I'm also having problems with my DVD drive. It wont read my DVD's but it will read my cd's. Need help please. Thank you.

Run the Dell Diagnostics on the drive. You did not say what model of computer
you have, but the Diagnostics may be on your hard drive.
Press F12 at startup while the blue Dell is on the screen. This will take you
to the boot menu where the Utility Partition or Diagnostics will be a choice.
Run the Custom Test for the drive and have a data DVD (not movie DVD) ready for
the read test.

When you ran the Diagnostics read test, did it read the data DVD?

I did what u said and when the test was done it said it passed. I forgot to put what my computer is sorry. Its the Inspiron 640m. It still doesn't work. I tried to uninstall it and reinstall it but that didn't work either. Do u have anymore suggestions? Thank you.

yes it read it. it works for software too. I just dont understand why it only does it for my movies. When i go into my computer and click on it, the drive opens and tells me to insert a disc. It must be something with vista cause i never had any problems with xp.

If the Diagnostics read the data DVD, then the drive is OK.
What kind of movies are theses that are giving a problem?
When you played the movie on XP, what software played it for you?

I tried playing Transformers 2, The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury and Paranormal Activity.Thier the original DVDs. XP would play my movies with Media Play or Power DVD.

It sounds like you did not install the DVD codecs after you
switched to Vista. Download and install VLC Media Player.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
It is a free program and will install the DVD codecs.

It still isn't working. It still tells me that there isn't a disc in drive D please insert one. I don't know if I did the download wrong or what, but i'm getting to the point were i'm just going to reinstall xp. I don't know what else to do.
