Bev, Thank you very much for your replies. I have found a lot of information helpful. I still can't can't get the problem fixed. When I restart my computer you are supposed to hit delete at dell logo and change boot sequence to boot from cd first it does not work. When starting or restarting my computer I get a lot of problems such as having to hit ctrl alt delete to get system to start. I have to close Lsafe,vsmon and lockts to get my computer up. I have windows XP ready to install but need this fixed first.

Try running Dell diagnostics extended test on the hard drive, the procedures should be in the owner's manual. You could go the hard drive's manufacturer's website and download their diagnostics to a floppy.
