RAID array rebuild= drive size discrepancy

Hello All,

I have a Dimension 8400 running XP, with a Maxtor 160GB SATA RAID array.  The RAID controller is an Intel 82801FR running RAID1 (mirror).  I had media failure on the second drive that caused array degradation, went through tech support, etc. and Dell sent me two new drives.  But they are 250GB Maxtors.  We installed the first drive and rebuilt the array.  Everything is hunkey-dorey....  Installed the second drive and rebuilt the array again....  A-OK.  After finishing however, I noticed something strange.  The RAID array is only 160 GB.  What gives?  Does rebuilding a 250GB drive off a 160GB drive reformat the 250 to a 160???  I don't understand why the volumes aren't showing their proper size.... more importantly, can this be fixed?  If I have 250GB, I want 250!

I really don't want to start from scratch on a HD install, format, and OS load.  I hope it's not necessary.  It's a pain in the but and I don't have OEM disks, just the krappy recovery CD they stick you with...  And that's why I have a RAID system anyway!

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Here's a summary of the RAID controller system info:

The mirror will replicate the original exactly. You can use a partitioning utility (Partition Magic, etc.) or you can see if the Intel Matrix RAID accelerator software will do the job.

I'd first see if the Intel RAID manager can do the job. If it can't, then break the mirror, use Partition Magic to stretch the partition, and then rebuild the mirror. It'll save you a reinstall.

thanks!  this makes sense...

can the drive be partitioned after the rebuild, or should I reformat the drive and start over?  i would guess that the answer is that it can't be partitioned after array config.

If that's the case.... could I reformat the second drive, make a 160 GB partition, then rebuild the array using drive 1 and the partition on the second drive.  After doing that: reformat drive1, partition it and repeat the rebuild off the mirrored partition of drive2?

will this work?

and will the RAID controller mirror both partitions or will I end up with a C: mirror and two more (D: and E:) partitions???

again, thanks a bunch!
