Read CD's Write DVD's not able to Read DVD's

All was fine since the 8400 was purchased.  The other night I was able to create a DVD using Studio 10.  When I went to play the DVD on the PC no luck - Works fine using a DVD player.  When I access the DVD using My computer blank screen.  When I put a CD (audio or Data) in everything works fine.  The drive is a Phillips DVD + - RW DVD8631.  Can anyone tell me if the drive needs to be replaced.I haven't added anything to the environment since it worked last

Thanks for any and all assistance

When I try to access using explorer window is empty doesn't even show me how much space is used or available on the disk.  Also when viewing My COmputer the verbage next to the drive just says DVD-RW drive when there is a DVD loaded.  When a CD is loaded it gives me a description.  The software I'm using is InterVideo WinDVD 7

Try accessing the disc in Explorer. Do you have a DVD program such as PowerDVD?

I have tried commercial DVD's in both viewing contents using WinDVD as well as viewing files vis My Computer.  Neither work.  My computer just brings up a blank screen.  I have also tried viewing a data dvd that I had created earlier and I get the same results.

Thanks for helping me resolve this.

Do you have any data or commercial DVDs you can check?

I tried tonight to write and read a DVD created with Studio 10.  It wrote the DVD fine and then played it fine using WinDVD 7.  So at this point it appears the only DVD's it doesn't read are commercial movies.  Any ideas with this latest development?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I downloaded it the other night and installed it - Didn't help.  I also deleted the IDE controller and tried re-insatlling it.  That didn't help either

Scott:

There is a firmware update for your drive. Download and instructions are here. Try that.

It's up to you how you want to pursue this. Since the Philips still burns ok, adding a DVD-ROM would cost you about $20. It might save you that much in aspirin trying to fix this. :)

I prefer having a DVD-ROM and a DVD±RW. I think it's the ideal setup.

Thanks for your help.  Unfortunately I don't have any 5 1/4" bays available.  I'm going to replace the existing Drive.  Any comments on this drive ?    Sony Internal 16x DVD+RW Multi-Drive (DRU820A)

The drive is nice but that price is outrageous. Let me suggest you peruse Newegg's DVD burner deals.

ScottEVH, were you able to resolve your issue? Ironically, I have exact same problem after recording a DVD in Studio 9! I don't think purchasing new drive is an option, the old one worked just fine before.
