recover raid 1 mirror
For a Studio XPS 9100 w/ 1 TB drives as Raid 1 mirror array, after an MS Win7 update, system refused to boot, reported no valid boot device. Ran full diagnostics on both drives, no errors reported, but noticed the free space reported on the drives was slightly different. Checked some forums (not this one) and found advice that the mirroring might be broken. Unplugged one drive, booted no problem, has run since, but Intel Matrix Storage Manager at boot reports the array is degraded. So, assuming there really is no hardware problem, any advice on how to recover the mirror? Intel Rapid Store has on at least 2 occasions reported and rebuilt the mirror in the past, took a while but no impact. Can I indicate the preferred drive so it will rebuild again?

Have you tried reinstalling the drive you removed? The usual procedure to repair a RAID 1 having a degraded status is to replace the failed drive with a new one of the same size as the working drive. The RAID ROM generally rebuilds the RAID automatically. If that doesn't happen when you reinstall your second drive, you have the option of using the Intel Rapid Storage Technology app found in your programs list to create a RAID 1 from an existing drive (assuming you still want to use the RAID option).

It did work as described in the response. After I posted the question I thought I might as well try that and see what happened. I was not expecting it, as it had failed to rebuild in the original case and I saw posts saying that would not work unless the other disk was initialized, or boot sector zeroed, or similar, not consistent in the details. I am in favour of Raid 1 in theory, wanted to continue to use it. So I was relieved that the disk did rebuild the mirror and it has now completed, appears to be working correctly again. Thanks for your feedback. Hope this may help someone else. Question answered.
