"Dell" drives are not manufactrured by Dell. Dell buys them in bulk from the same manufacturers (whoever they can work the best deal from) that you can get them from, Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor - My 4600 came with a Hitachi drive in it, and my daughter's came with a Western Digital.
Dell does the same thing with all the components in your "Dell" pc - the case, the memory chips, the modems, video cards, etc.
They do what you and I cannot - assemble the pieces into a coherent, working computer.
Therefore, you can replace or add any manufacturers hard drive, etc (as long as it has the correct specs) in your computer.
