"Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" missing and reappears

Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media was Missing from task bar on start up.  It was not hidden, it just disappeared.  I plug my external drive back in and plugged in the USB and it reappears. The External Drive was disconnected after the computer was shut down and reconnected after the computer was started and up and running.  Is there some sort of connection in the way I removed the external drive?  I am Operating Windows 8.1 in an XPS 8700.  This didn't happen with Windows 8.

Hi NewChas,

To fix this issue, follow these steps:

  • Right click on the notification area
  • Click on Customize Notifications
  • Find "Safely Remove Hardware" in the list that appears and choose "Always show".
  • Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Hardware.
  • Click on the Add/Remove Windows Components.
  • Double click Networking Services in the list.
  • Un-check the " UPnP User Interface " .
  • Click OK

Check for functionality.

Also, make sure that the latest windows updates are installed on the system. Refer to the link http://dell.to/19u6M5t for step by step instructions on how to change the windows updates and set them to recommended settings.

Hope this helps!
