Samsung CD-R/RW drive will write to RW disk, but not R disk. Reads both.

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 with Home and xp sp-2. CD drive is the samsung R/RW sw 252s. Works great with RW disks, but will only read R disks, won't write. Tried 2 different brands of disks. Using sonic to burn. Any ideas?

Thanks so much for responding. I did what you said, but I am having trouble opening the file.  I downloaded, and went through the first 3 steps of extracting the file, double clicking on the icon SFCWIN 3.06.4, and I clicked on the Download File Open button. A file window opens like I'm to save it or open from a file. Tried all kinds of things to open it, but no luck. I'm stuck at this point. Could you help me through this? I sure appreciate your help. I have to run to a meeting, but if you could respond, I'll work on this when I get back tonight. Thanks

Hi Tben,

See if this Dell firmware will help the drive.
SW-252S

Some more info. When I extract the files from SFDNWIN, I get an "Open" dialogue box and it wants a File Name. Even when I trace the file location in the title, I can't get anything to happen. Also when I open R902DEL, I'm asked what program created it, and it won't open either. Any suggestions?

Hi Tben,

We bowl on Wednesdays, so late getting in.
As for the firmware, you should be logged in with Admin rights.
Also we have seen some issues with these firmware if the drive is in the Second Bay, (dell uses the Cable Select jumper feature, each drive has its jumper set on CS or CSEL and loaction on the cable determines Master/Slave, "Middle" connection being Slave. If this is the case, you may need to enter the BIOS and turn the Top drive ( Drive 0 ) off.

Best Regards

Thanks again. Would I be turning the top drive off in the BIOS to try to solve the problem without the firmware SW-252S update or is it to allow me to overcome the problems I detailed above? Thanks.
