SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SN-324F
i have an inspiron 1100, win xp pro with samsung CDRW/DVD SN-324F. this dvd/cd-rom is not functioning at all.
on the device manager, it has a yellow exclamation point and has this error message: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39)."
i noticed that this ceased to fail a day after burning cd rom copies. and my Sonic RecordNow software when clicked has this message: "No compatible Recordable or rewritable devices could be found on your system."
i tried uninstalling this device and re-installing and the error message is still the same. had someone in the group have had this problem? can you please advise the solution or what has been done to correct this.
i can't even use my cd rom or dvd player to run the dell diagnostic. there is no available download for the driver of this unit in the dell website as the default windows device driver is used. i already went to the
www.samsung-odd.com but this only shows the upgrading of the firmware flash memory. and not sure if this will work. before i will refer to the dell customer support (by email; their chat seems to be not working as i waited for sometime and then got disconnected.)
thanks for your assistance.

Open regedit and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Now delete the keys:
LowerFilters and UpperFilters in the right pane.
NB only one key may be present but still delete it.
Now reboot and your optical drive(s) should function again.
NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software.

hi bacillus,
thanks a lot, man. got the cd/dvd working! this is great. there was only the LowerFilters that i deleted. and you are right, i can't use the Sonic RecordNow software, still got the message "no compatible recordable or rewritable devices could be found on your system."
do i need to remove this first using the add/remove program and re-install?
thanks again.
