Scan-Burn To CD

Sounds like a plan to me..
The LTD 163 DVD drive does support reading both CD writeable media and if the Panasonic DMR-75 does as well (sorry I did not look up the specs on DMR-75 first) then I do not see a problem. I am curious though, are you archiving the "before-editing" pictures on a CD/RW, then do all the editing of the pictures from the folder you originally scanned the files to. Next burn the "edited" pictures to a new CD disc, CD-R or CD-RW?
Are you going to keep the original pre-edited files as well or use the CD/RW for another project?

Why I am asking this is, if you plan to archive the pictures for the future, I would suggest you use a CD-R disc rather than a CD/RW, more reliable.

I will second Jeffs remarks about RW media! Dyes fade and they can go unreadable without warning.

You are going to a lot of time and effort when you scan slides. Burn the initial scans as a Data CD project onto a CD-R and finalize it.

Assuming you have the HD space, work on the pictures there until you are happy with them. Then burn another finalized Data CD-R with them.

Thanks for the help. I will use CD-R disks for permanent photo file storage as you suggest. The Panasonic does read DVD-R and DVD-RAM.  The pre edited files will be stored on an external Maxtor drive. I haven't purchased that yet.  What confused me was the DVD CD drives. I wasn't sure whether a DVD drive could handel a non DVD disk. Actuall what features does the DVD drive have that make it different from any other non DVD drive?

The DVD-ROM drive has the ability to read CD media as well as much of the DVD media available.

I just got a Maxtor One Touch II. If you have 1394 or USB2, you will be pleased. I did a 30gb backup using USB1 and it took 24 hours! Off to buy 1394 pcmica card for my laptop…

One other thing is the slide scanning. There was some recent discussion in the Special Interest – Photo/Video conference about that. A lot of flatbed scanners claim to be able to do slides but produce junk! You need a scanner with about 4800dpi Optical to do slides. You have to read the fine print to see what the Optical value is. Most hide their shortcomings by emphasizing their interpolated dpi. That means the software takes a guess at what is missing.

The Dell 8250 has USB2 and I added Dell 1394 Firewire. I was considering The Epson 4870 Photo or Microtek I900 scanner. Then I read on the web that Epson was replacing the 4870. Since they are now discounting it I assume that a new version will be available early next year.  I am inclined towards Epson since the UK photo websites have done ten to 15 page test reviews of the 4870.
