Seagate HD comparison

I knew the "RK" was retail kit. I don't need the cables, screws, disks, etc. After I made the above post, I found the Barracuda is listed as a 7200.9 drive and the other as a 7200.7, probably an older version?? Still both are on different sections and pages of the Seagate web site. There must be a difference in performance somewhere? I don't think the RK is listed as "Barracuda".

As it stands, when I decide it's time to get one, I'll probably go for the best price, which is now Newegg for the Barracuda and Best Buy for the other.

Unless someone knows a better reason to choose one over the other. I still assume the 8Mb cache is what I want??

The one sold by newegg is a OEM, or bare drive, no cables, screws, or documentation

The one from Best buy is a Retail Kit, comes with everything you need.

Go for the 8mb cache, it's a little faster than a 2mb cache hard drive.

Go for the 8meg.

Maxtor's are the only brand I know of that have real problems, other than that it is a matter of preference.

 

I have used WD for years, but recently changed to Seagate because of the warranty. No failures yet with either brand, knock on wood.

One more foolish question about this. Was I advised right about staying away from WD? They have an 80G, 7200rpm, 8Mb cache (WD800JB) that would best fit my needs. Right now I have one of those as my D backup drive in my 4400. The other 3 drives I have are Seagates. The Maxtor was my 4600's C drive that failed and I replaced it with a Seagate. Warranties although nice are probably not an issue. I doubt either machine will be around for 3 years. It's whether the WD will be reliable for at least a year???

 

I'm running Ghost 10 on both machines. I was able to "restore" the new Seagate as my new C drive without too much pain from image data saved on the second HD. So I may be answering my own question. Even if the WD fails, I should have backup data. I would just like to know what people think of WD's drives in general vs Seagate.

The Western Digital, 8mb cache, JB Series are excellent hard drives.
