Second Hard Drive+usage
First time posting
System, Dimension9150...Intel Pentium D820 w/DualCore
Windows Media Center, XP
Background; Just suffered and recovered from a fatal hard drive crash.
Actions Taken; Replaced the bad 160 gig hard drive with a 300 gig drive at plug "0"
Also installed a new 160 gig drive at plug "1"
Note: I do not want to use RAID feature.
Problem: 1. Diagnostic tests recogonized and passed both drives.
2. On my computer window, 300 gig hard drive in plug "0" shows up as
drive [ C ]
3. 160 gig hard drive in plug "1" does not show in window.
Question: How do I get the second hard drive to show up in window and how do I store drawings and data on the second drive?

You need to enable the drive in the BIOS setup (press F2 at boot).
Then you need to initialize, partition and format the drive in Disk Management.
Then you should be able to see the drive in My Computer and copy files to it. (You can also format the drive in My Computer)

Thanks for the help, but no luck!
I did go into the "F2" mode which did show both drives.
Both passed the diagnostic tests the second time.
"F2" would not permit me to connect drive position [ "1" ]
For what it's worth, the Hard Drive in [ "0" ] is;
SATA, WD3200-AAKS-00B3A0
Hard Drive in [ "1" ] is a IDE, Samsung HD160JJ/P
I know there must be a simple way to get the second HD working.
Any help is appreciated..........

Did you initialize and partition the drive in Disk Management?

I know this may sound a bit dumb, but I tried to find Disk Management to set up a partition.
I did get into the setup, [ "F2" ], saw the drives but the only thing i could do wash either turn them on or off. Could not find Disk Management here or using [ "F12" ]
The same thing goes for the BIOS.
So far I've trained myself fairly well as a non I.T. so I'm very careful in not doing something that would really screw things up!

"Oooops!" I made a mistake in hitting the green solutions button!
The problem is still preasent!

Disk Management is in Windows. Right click on My Computer and select Manage. Then select Disk Management.
Then select the HD and right click the image of the drive. Select Initialize (sometimes you don't need to do this). Then select Create Partition. After that you can format and you should be good to go.

I think I was too tired to follow the steps exactly the first time, however, after a nap and try number two, I got the second drive initiallized successfully! It's labeled [ "L' ]
So as not to go through this again should I ever need to, I keep a running hard copy file on everything I learn on maintaining my system.:smileyvery-happy:
