Second harddisk SATA not recognized (Dimension 5150)

Question

Just installed a second harddrive.
300GB Maxtor SATA.
I already upgraded my BIOS to A05.
BIOS does recognize both drives (first and second).
However, Windows only sees the first drive (a 160 GB Maxtor SATA).
New hardware detection etc. does not have any effect.

Anyone who can help me? Tips, suggestions, ideas, etc.

both discs are SATA drives, and there aren't any jumpers on both drives. So how can I set them as Cable Select ?? Anyone??

Go into Control Panel; Administrative tools; Storage Management. You should be able to partition and format the drive there.

I do not remember doing anything else when I installed my second drive (other than I had a hard time finding a data cable) after I enabled it in the BIOS.

I cannot partition and format the drive, since it is not recognized in Windows XP.
I want to partition and format it, but Disk Management in Windows, does not see the drive (like there is no second drive).

An update about the situation:

I just ran the Diagnoses Tool from Dell. Just after the boot from the CDROM,
did some hard disk testing. It sees the second hard drive,
but it gives the following error:
"Device initialization error. Error code: 655D:0009
Unable to access USB"

It does however complete testing of the drive. No further error occur.

Seems like some initialization problem. Anyone with new ideas?

Thats right Jack.
No entry of the installed harddisk in Disk Management. Therefore I cannot initialize and partition and format the drive.
However, BIOS sees the harddisk.
When I start the Diagnostics tool it can successfully test the complete drive (all tests are conducted successfully), however I get an error stating "Cannot initialize the drive" , error code 655D:0009".

I am starting to think my SATA controller is not able to handle the disk. Any one agree? Or better ideas? Suggestions? Maybe a good disk analyzer??

In the lower part of the Disk Mgmt screen there should be an entry for Disk 1 Unknown with its reported size and stating that it is Not Initialized.  The right side of the screen should show it as unallocated.  This will be the only indication that Windows sees the disk until it has been initialized and partitioned.  Are you saying you do not have this entry?   Seagate has provided this helpful info on its site:   http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/howto/install_xp_disk_mgmt.html   Perhaps something on that page or a link from it would help.

Still thinking, but I think I would try another drive first.  It is possible that the drive isn't reporting its parameters properly.
