Second HDD shows incorrect capacity
Hi,
I have finally added a 500 GB HDD Hitachi Deskstar P7K500, ATA-133, to my old Dimension 8250 running XP SP2. BIOS has latest update and detected the additional HDD (Primary Drive 1 OFF). The system's disk management shows a capacity of 31.49 GB for the second HDD. For this reason, I have not formatted or partitioned the new HDD yet. Should I possibly lower the UDMA or what other course of action is suggested. Additonal question: Does it make any sense to use Acronis' DiskDirector already installed rather than diskmgmt. Thank you for your assistance.

Sounds like the drive already has a FAT32 partition on it - in which case the maximum size is 32G.
Use the disc manager to delete the existing partition and create a new one - if you want it to be larger than 32G, DO NOT partition it as FAT32 - you must use NTFS.

Thank you, ejn63. Actually FAT16 partition (0xde) according do Acronis DiskDirector. In disk manager it is indicated that 31.49 GB are not allocated. According to the information in device manager (volumes) the available capacity is 32248 MB (partition type MBR). Disk manager does not provide for deletion of partition. However, there is an option "Delete files" to delete files irrevocably. These files apparently relate to the user profile totaling a capacity of 53.58 KB. In addition, a new partition could be created with a maximum capacity of 32248 MB which would, however, be of no use. Also conversion to dynamic volume would be possible, but this is not what I am looking for.
Any further assistance you can afford will be greatly appreciated.

What does the BIOS report for the drive capacity? Have you enabled large drive support in XP?

ejn63 Thank you for your continued support. My BIOS does not report any drive capacities. For the Primary Drive 1 it still indicates OFF rather than Hard Drive. BIOS version is 04. This BIOS version and XP SP2 have eliminated the problem of disk drives larger than 127 GB. For both HDDs the driver version is therefore 5.1.2600.2180.
Meanwhile I have become aware that the FAT16 partition type 0xDE may relate to DELL Diagnocstic (included in MBR, hidden to Windows). See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320982/en-us/
Any ideas leading to a solution are most welcome.

Correction: The FAT16 partition seems to be part of the Primary Drive 0. I have misinterpreted the information provided in Acronis' DiskDirector. Sorry.

You must set the primary drive 1 to ENABLED first.

The problem has meanwhile been resolved. Quite unintentionally the jumpers of the second HDD had not been set correctly. For both HDDs they are now on CABLE SELECT. Disk Management shows the correct capacity while the BIOS is still "OFF" for the Primary Drive 1. This certainly will change once the second HDD has been partitioned and formatted.Thanks again for your assistance ejn63.
